Focus and Scope

The British Student Doctor Journal aims to be a high-quality, peer-reviewed, open access, medical student-led academic journal, with a UK focus. We aim to foster academic discussion, innovation, critical thought and reflection, and to have an impact on clinical practice. We are a novel journal, in that we are primarily written, edited and peer-reviewed by students, for students.

All articles published in The British Student Doctor Journal must be original, rigorous, important and relevant to medical students and clinical practice.

We encourage UK-based medical students to publish in The British Student Doctor Journal, however studying at a UK medical school is not a compulsory requirement as long as the article is of relevance to UK medical students.

A description of the article types that we publish, as well as the specific requirements for each section are detailed in our author guidelines. Please note that there are no processing or authorship charges for publication in The British Student Doctor Journal.

Publication Frequency

Items in this journal are published collectively, as part of an issue with its own Table of Contents. The journal is biannual, with issues in January and July.

Open Access Policy

This journal provides immediate open access to its content on the principle that making research freely available to the public supports a greater global exchange of knowledge.

Authors of articles published remain the copyright holders and grant third parties the right to use, reproduce, and share the article according to the Creative Commons license agreement.

Journal Archiving

The journal’s publisher focuses on making content discoverable and accessible through indexing services. Content is also archived around the world to ensure long-term availability.

Journals are indexed by Google Scholar and available for harvesting via OAI-PMH.
DOAJ registration will be completed for our journals on an individual basis as soon as possible.
To ensure permanency of all publications, this journal utilises the Portico service to create permanent archives for the purposes of preservation and restoration.
Journal content is also made available via Cardiff University’s institutional repository, ORCA.

Journal History

The British Student Doctor Journal was founded in 2016 by the inaugural Editors-in-Chief, James Kilgour and Shivali Fulchand, at the time two fourth-year medical students at Cardiff University.
